Ideal Weather Conditions Are Driving A Strong Swarm Impluse

Blackberries have just started to bloom and we have a slight storm passing through giving the ground a good soak.  If things work out we could have a very good blackberry nectar flow this year.  Usually the ground my neighborhood gets too dry by the time the blackberry bloom starts for them to be a good nectar source and the bees work Black Locust instead.  However with the shift in our normal weather patterns things have been strongly stacked in favor of good nectar flows from everything this year.

Another unusual trend occurring this year that is a result of beneficial weather patterns is all the early swarms in the area.  I've picked up a few already and from observations I'm seeing in my own hives I think a lot of beekeepers that split early, or caught early swarms are going to be caught off guard that those very hives could already be restarting the swarm cycle with the onset of the blackberries.

I'm often surprised at the number of city beekeepers that do relatively little to control swarming.  If you live in the woods miles away from urban areas, then swarms likely aren't creating any issues.  However in populated urban areas where there are only a few old hollow trees, swarms typically make homes in peoples walls/attics (or other creative spots) that are difficult (expensive) to remove them from.  There are several methods to control swarming and they all involve creating an environment where the queen has a broodnest area with empty cells to lay in. This is not the same thing as providing them empty space to build comb, although sometimes it might appear that's what you are doing.

Too control swarming and build bigger colonies you will want to look into one of these methods:
  1. Checkerboarding 
  2. Demaree Method
  3. Broodnest Expanson
A fourth option to consider if you also want to increase colonies, or you can't commit to one of the above methods is that you can split a hive.  There are various ways to make a split, but the result is you have two or more hives.  This reduces resources and the population in each hive and thus creates room for the queen to lay. 

If a hive was split and left to make queens, or already issued a primary swarm you can still get another swarm (about a week later) when the new queens emerge.  While secondary swarms (there can be multiple) are less common they can happen when you have multiple queens emerging and the hive still feels it is too populated.  The virgin queen(s) will leave with more bees to each find new home, instead of fighting each other.  This can go on until there is just one queen left in the hive or one queen left that removes any remaining competition.  To help limit this possibility I usually only leave 2-3 good looking queen cells that are close to each other.

Raspberries are still drawing a lot of attention.


Crimson clover is blooming.  


Poppies (Papaver somniferum) are blooming and full of black pollen.


Camassia quamash is in bloom.


Rosa nutkana is in bloom.


Columbine is in bloom.


Blackberry spikes are starting and are both a pollen and nectar source.


Black Locust is starting to bloom and is an excellent nectar source.


Sage is in bloom.

Quickdraw (Wallingford Swarm)
Installed a swarm from another top bar beekeeper into this hive.  This is my first time coming across a swarm of regressed bees.  I'm curious to record the measurements of the cell size for the new worker comb they create.

It's hard to take a picture that can capture their organization.  Upon transferring them into the hive they very quickly spread out along the walls.  It is sort of like when you have metal shavings on a piece a glass and run a magnet underneath and everything lines up like magic all at once.

Solis
There are a decent number of bees in this hive and I couldn't find any signs of disease.  However I found more drone brood than worker brood which concerns me and might be a sign this queen is running out of steam.  Something else interesting I noticed was that they had a few worker cells on the comb edges which I've never seen in a hive before.  There were also signs that they were backfilling and the queen is ignoring the combs in the rest of the hive which could be a swarm setup.

They really like this queen.  Despite all the issues I've had with this queen line I still want to keep them going.


Dyno
Saw the queen and she looked good.  Found eggs and a patch of 1-2 day old larvae which means that this was a primary swarm and the queen started laying a day or two after she was installed into the hive.  I staggered drawn comb and empty bars and they had started on three new combs.  Oddly they were mostly drawing large honey cell sized comb.

Nuc (Swarm in Loyal Heights)
Got a swarm call for a smaller swarm that was maybe 2-3 pounds of bees (6,000-8,000 bees).  I put them in a nuc as I think it will take them all summer to build up.

Rebel daughter & Rebel (Titan)
I removed what I thought was a tiny daughter queen that was similar to the one I removed from the sister nuc.  I only found drone larvae in cells and several in-progress queen cups that looked to be made from drone cells. Since the Rebel hive is still having issues with DWV I moved the queen in a cage with a marshmallow plug to try and introduce her back to her original hive.  I'm hoping that since she is the mother of all the workers she will be easily accepted and preferred if I did miss a drone laying queen somewhere.  I'm going to call this hive Titan so it's easier to keep track of from Rebel which is now queenless.

Nuc Combo (Attis)
This is the nuc I made up with cells from Rebel (Ballard daughter) hive that didn't make it and I introduced a virgin queen.  I found drone brood on combs in the back and worker brood on combs in the front of the hive.  I'm hoping that the drone cells in the back are from the frames that came from the tiny queen in the other hive.  I am going to call this nuc Attis.

Keeping my fingers crossed that this queen mated well.

Ballard
They are now at the back of the hive drawing comb.  The queen has been laying eggs everywhere and I found several new cups with eggs in them.  I also found what looked to be several emergency type cells along the edges of the frames.  I think the hive is now in reproductive swarm mode and while I'm not seeing backfilling I'm also not going to be able to stop them much longer since I'm out of space.  I did pull out all the cells with eggs to force them back another week and will plan to split them in the next few days.

The queen is looking good.

Nuc (Loyal Heights Swarm)
They were fairly defensive today despite the fact it was beautiful out.  Took a look at what they were doing and found the queen and saw her drop an egg walking around on the frame.  Hopefully she figures it out that they go in the cells.  No signs of any brood yet, but that's inline with my thinking that this was a secondary swarm with a virgin queen.  They aren't building comb very quickly, but they aren't all that big either so it balances out.

Its hard to tell in this picture, but she hasn't fully filled out yet and has the look of a new queen.

Attis Nuc
The queen is getting her bearings now and there is more capped worker brood in the hive!  So far the pattern looks good and there is potential for her to be a good queen.  I'm curious if the workers will all be the same color (maybe poor mating) or if there is some variation (signs she mated well).

Ballard
Pulled the queen and about 7 frames of bees and resources and moved her to the Luna hive.  I tried to get as little capped and open brood as possible.  I am doing this because I want to give her a reset for disease levels/mite load which can hide in capped brood.  I saw several queen cups and a few with larvae in them. I'll go back in a week to cut down or divide up the capped cells to prevent a secondary swarm which is likely from a large hive like this.

Quickdraw
Saw the queen and she looked good.  I can usually tell the different between an older laying queen and a virgin or newly laying queen and she was definitely an older queen.  Based on the age of some of the brood she started laying a few days after installing the swarm which also confirms this was a primary swarm.  They were building comb and off to a good start.

One interesting observation I noted was that there were several workers with hairless thoraxes.  Sometimes this happens during robbing and the hairs get pulled out, or it can happen with age and they get worn away. However in both cases you can still kind of tell hairs used to be there.  The few bees I saw in this hive didn't look like there was ever hair there (much like a queen).  I will watch for this on young nurse bees to see if any are born that way.  This could also be Chronic Paralysis Virus (CPV) which makes the bees hairless.

This bee may have Chronic Paralysis Virus (CPV).  It is also an older worker looking at how much it's wings have been worn. I saw 5-6 bees throughout the hive like this.  If this is CPV the usual cure is to re-queen.  Since this is a swarm, I'm going to wait and see what happens.  I want to find this on younger bees before taking a corrective action as the swarm cycle can reset a lot of issues.


I find it interesting that this comb is large honey cell sized. They must think they need drones or storage space.  Usually I find more drones in swarms so maybe they are trying to restore a natural balance.  I saw the same thing in Dyno last week.


This is another new comb and I was happy to see that it was worker sized.  I wanted to draw attention in this photo to where the two initial comb lobs met and they left a passage.  They don't always do this, but the odds increase the closer they are to the entrance.

Rosemary split with the new name Echo
The new queen is doing great and has laid several frames of worker brood.  She has also filled out and is much larger than I noticed previously.  Now that I have a laying queen in this hive I'm going to name the hive Echo.  This is the sister queen to the queen in the Attis Nuc.

Rosemary
They were slightly defensive today.  I found them starting to draw new comb.  The queen is laying everywhere in the hive and I saw them making several queen cups.  The broodnest still looked open and I added some empty bars for them to build out with the next flow about to start.  No signs of disease anymore.

Titan
The good news is that I found the queen released and she was roaming around looking for places to lay.  I'm not sure when they released her, but I couldn't find any young larvae or eggs, not that there was more than a handful of empty cells to lay in.  Most of the drone brood that was laid by the old drone laying queen had been capped.  I added an empty drawn comb to give her a spot to work with.  This will also help to confirm there isn't another issue.  I'm also thinking I might move all the drone brood out as it could lead to a disease buildup.

The queen is back home with her children.

They actually made several queen cells.  It also looks like most of the sick brood has been cleaned out.

May Flowers and Favorable Weather Conditions

Sadly May was a busy month and I wasn't able to find time to post any updates.  The bees have been building up and storing a good amount of honey so far this season.  With regular hive checks and some efforts to keep the broodnest open, so far I've been successful at suppressing the swarming instinct without needing to split hives.  I've found that June is a much better month to split and mate queens in my neighborhood.    

I wasn't able to get a video but if you happen to walk by a Papaver somniferum in bloom you might be able to see the bees rolling around in the pollen like they are intoxicated.  As you can see here this girl is trying to haul back as much pollen as she can carry.


Choisya or Mexican orange bloomed early May as well.


Wild Geraniums started blooming early May and will continue until it gets too dry for them.


Creeping thyme is a good nectar source.


Photinia is another May nectar source and is common in city neighborhoods.


Camas is a native bulb that blooms early May.


Some varieties of Lavender are already blooming.


Raspberries bloomed early in May.


Mock Orange or Philadelphus coronarius is a nectar source.


Black Locust is a good nectar source and can create a nectar flow.  We have quite a few of them around in the neighborhood.


 Raphiolepis umbellata provides nectar.


When thinking of bee plants it's easy to forget that flowering trees or shrubs can also be great food sources. Once established trees and shrubs generally hold up well during dry weather, when many flowers are wilting, and can reach water deeper in the ground which keeps their nectar output going. The Snowbell tree gets it's name from the snow white bell shaped flowers that hang downwards along it's branches.  This tree has a compact shape with dark green leaves and horizontally spreading branches.  The tree does well in partial sun and tolerates acidic soil and it does not complete with woodland plants in it's root area.  However it does need frequent watering if in a dry or high sun exposure location and also needs to be protected from wind.  You can propagate this tree using softwood cuttings in summer or from seed.

Rosemary Hive
Checked to see how they have been doing in the last week and there are no signs of backfilling and in fact I found a fair number of empty cells in the broodnest and not much open brood.  I suspect the hot weather last week followed by a storm caused them to shut down brood rearing for a few days.  Several queen cups present but all were empty.  Saw the queen and she looked healthy.

Luna Hive
They are now using about 70% of the hive and are backfilling.  Saw the queen and she looked good.  Lots of frames of drones coming as well and they have been storing a good amount of nectar in the last week.  Found 3 queen cups with eggs laid today in them.  I removed the cells and added a few empty bars to the broodnest and a couple bars of empty comb to the back of the hive for nectar storage.  My goal is to split this hive but ideally I want to delay the process 10-15 days.

Lots of drones.  Some beekeepers would cut out frames like this, I see these guys as mating stock for queens at my other locations.  So far this is my best hive and they have shown the ability to eliminate DWV.  In visual scans of my photos and during inspections I'm not seeing any signs of varroa on the bees either.  We need more genetics like these in the area.

Ballard Hive
They are still building up slowly.  Some signs of backfilling, but overall a good amount of brood coming.  Not many larvae at the moment, but I suspect this coming week of sunshine will change that.  Using about 40% of the hive.  Didn't see any signs of DWV.  Added an empty bar for them to build.

She is a conservative queen and building up slowly.


Rebels
Still seeing a few bees with DWV, and those are mostly drones.  The hive is growing again and there is a good amount of brood coming.  Lots of orientation flights going on.  They are using about 75% of the hive now and are storing a lot of pollen and nectar.  Added a couple empty bars for them to build.

Here is a photo of a comb repair I did last year.  You can't really tell anymore but there is a window through the comb and the old comb was partially cut off because it was perpendicular to the bar.

Rosemary Hive
Brood nest is backfilled but no signs of swarming yet.  Nectar and pollen stores are way up from a week ago.  They also did nothing with the empty bar I gave them last week and I adjusted it's placement.  The hive is 90% full now but they are not raising much brood.  I'm curious to see what this week of nice weather brings and if they will start building comb or decide they would rather make plans to swarm.

Pollen is coming in.  I like to see a lot of variety.

Rosemary Hive
Opened the hive to pull brood frames and resources to make up two nucs.  Inspection was quick and saw the queen and that they have finally decided to start building new comb.  I pulled 6 frames total out of the hive.

Nucs
Made up two nucs with virgin queens in cages that emerged today.  The source was from an overwintered local hive.

Luna Hive
Lots of nectar and they are starting to cap honey.  The color is darker and I suspect it's from the Hawthorn trees.  Hawthorn doesn't seem to be the first choice for them to work but it's very abundant so they can be picky about which tree they think is just right to work.  Lots of capped drone cells as well.  They were building a little crazy comb in the back and had built most of the two bars I gave them last week.  I gave them several more bars to work on.  No signs they were trying to build queen cells this time and should be good for another 10 or so days before I suspect the hive will be out of room.

Nucs
Released the virgin queens in both nucs in the AM so they could potentially get out to fly today.  The South nuc might be a little too week and need more bees.

Ballard Hive
They are still building up slowly and are now using about 60% of the hive.  Some signs of backfilling, but overall a good amount of brood coming and they were building comb.  Workers had cleaned cells further back in the hive for the queen to lay in but she seemed to be ignoring them.  Found a single cup with a freshly laid egg that I removed.  It's possible that they don't like the slow buildup either and they might be thinking of replacing her.  Will see if a new queen cell returns next week.  No signs of DWV were found.

Rebels
Only saw a few bees with DWV and most of those were drones.  Lots of backfilling but they are also building new comb.  They are using about 90% of the hive now.  They were fairly calm for a late day inspection.  Added another empty bar for them to start working on.

The queen is looking well cared for now.


A good variety of pollen coming into this hive.  It's unusual to see pollen stored in this hive as they usually use it as fast as it comes in.

Luna Hive
No swarm plans yet, but they are running out of empty cells for the queen to lay in.  Saw the queen and she was busy looking for clean cells.  The drone population in this hive is peaking at about 25% of the population.  Yes this is higher than any of my other hives but they are still storing honey and the queen is still laying out frames in worker brood (at least any that aren't filled with honey).  They are building new comb on the bars I gave them as well.  Interestingly enough I think the high drone population has actually slowed them down a couple weeks on the swarm impulse given how backfilled the broodnest is at the moment.  Also I noted that drones were making an effort to cover capped worker brood to keep them warm while the workers were either collecting nectar/pollen or festooning to build comb.

There aren't many frames left where she can lay a patch of brood like this.  Notice all the drones on this frame.


The queen is looking in a cell to make sure it's clean.  I suspect this is why I sometimes miss her.


Rosemary hive
The hives growth seems to have slowed down a bit.  After just seeing a hive with a high drone count this hive seemed to be lacking in drones with less than 5% drones.  They aren't storing as much nectar/pollen, and are building comb slowly.

Nucs
Well so far things don't look good.  Took a quick look and couldn't find either queen.  Granted new queens can be hard to find sometimes, but I'm pretty sure they weren't around.  However I have missed them before so will check again in a few days.

Hive check (5/30/2014)
Ballard Hive
They are still building up slowly and are using about 65% of the hive now.  The honey arches on several frames seemed a bit light compared to what I've been seeing in the other hives.  Saw the queen and she looked good, but she still isn't being very aggressive in laying eggs.

Rebel Hive
The queen died in the last week.  I found her in the very back of the hive on the bottom board.  They were making several emergency queen cells.  Some capped and some close to being capped.  Cells were on three separate frames so I split out two nucs to increase my mating odds.  Not sure why they didn't see whatever killed the queen coming and my only thought is that perhaps the viral load they've had this spring has taken it's toll on the queen.  Overall DWV was actually looking pretty good on this inspection with just a few bees showing signs.

This was the cell that got damaged on removing the frame.  I'd guess she was around day 11.


Here's a cell they haven't capped yet.


Usually you don't find the old dead queen, but sure enough I saw a bee trying to drag her out.


Hive check (5/31/2014)
Plum Creek
Had a swarm call today and picked them up.  It seemed average sized for a swarm and I'd guess is was about 3 pounds of bees.  It seemed smaller so perhaps it's a secondary swarm with a virgin queen.  Based on the bee size I can tell they came from a hive using foundation.

Looks bigger from this angle.  At least I could reach it without a ladder.

Luna Hive
No signs of swarming and they are still finding space for the queen to lay in.  The entire hive is slowly turning into honey with a few exceptions here and there and a few frames of bee bread.  If they haven't tried to swarm by mid June I'll split them and let them build emergency cells. I squeezed out enough room today to add one more new bar they can build out.  Saw the queen and she looked good.  I also noticed that many bees were dancing to be cleaned by other bees.  I wonder if that hygienic behavior is part of what has helped them recover from disease.

Plum Creek
Had time to add syrup and some empty comb today.  They had built two tiny 4 inch lobs of comb in the last 16 hours that were so horribly off-center and crooked I had to remove them.  I did see a few eggs in one of the pieces so I now know this is a primary swarm with a laying queen.
